One of our business analytics students Sayantan Sanyal, presently working in Tata Consultancy Services as a Senior Business Analyst. We are certainly proud to see him shining like this and recently we have had an interview with him just to check what he is doing and talk about his journey in analytics training program.
Hello, Sayantan! Greetings from Data Brio Academy! We are here to chat with you about your career in analytics and data science. How are you?
I’m doing great. Thanks!
Where are you working now and in what role?
I am working as a Senior Business Analyst with Tata Consultancy Services.
What is your educational background?
I did engineering in electronics from WBUT and then completed my post graduate diploma in telecom management from IISWBM, Kolkata.
How did you decide on analytics as a career choice?
During my management course, I got introduced to problem solving for business using data. I started exploring R through online courses and realized that analytics and data science is an area which requires a mix of mathematical and statistical knowledge and analytical skills – it requires both computational and creativity power. I was also intrigued with machine learning as it can handle vast amount of data.
What made you join Data Brio Academy (DBA), the business analytics training institute in Kolkata ?
Though I was reading and learning from the internet, I realized that I needed proper guidance to enter this field. One of the key things that I was looking for was an institute that would help me get practical hands-on knowledge and exposure through projects. I did enquiries with several institutes and Data Brio Academy fitted my requirements perfectly as the faculty had rich corporate experience, they had great reputation in the market and the institute had government and corporate tie-ups. Well, the most important thing that helped me decide on DBA was that they offered an option of internship with corporates.
Which course did you do in DBA?
In DBA, I joined the Business analytics course with SAS and advanced excel and VBA tools. I also learned Tableau. I enjoyed the hands-on learning and the diversity of business problems in the assignments. The individual attention was simply unparalleled.
Sayantan, did you get the internship that you were looking for?
Yes, while doing my course, I was selected for internship with Business Brio and subsequently I started working as an Analyst there.
What kind of work were you doing as an Analyst?
I worked in different areas of data science in Business Brio. I worked in text mining in social media and sentiment analysis using various algorithms like LSI, HSA, clustering etc. for tobacco industry as well as telecom industry. We used R, GEPHI and nodeXL here. I also worked on marketing analytics for a retail chain where I used techniques like RFM, market basket analysis, clustering etc. For a smart city project, we used Tableau for visual analytics.
Can you share with us your moments of happiness during your work tenure?
I enjoyed a lot while working on marketing analytics because I learnt WEKA, a machine learning tool which I did not know earlier. It was not just computations and techniques alone but it involved lot of creativity as well while spotting solutions and depicting the findings. We could suggest to our client different product combinations, pricing and discounting options, targeting relevant customers etc. The outcome was immediate and visible. It gave me lot of satisfaction and we received much appreciation from the client too.
What kind of challenges have you faced while working in the analytics field?
Data cleaning in any project especially in social media analytics is a challenge. We had to try different techniques and algorithms as well as tools. We also need to cross-validate the data often.
Sayantan, would you like to share any advice and suggestions with those who aspire to get into the field of data science and analytics?
Though I have been in this area for about a year now, there is lot for me to learn. So what I will share is based on my limited experience. I think, 4 things are very important in this field –
- Passion – Be passionate about data and analysis
- Creativity – Have to be creative to explore and interpret the data and find the story-line
- Patience – Many a times you do not get the desired level of accuracy, so need to tune your model often
- The Right Guide – Though there are lot of information available on the internet, you need someone with the right experience to mentor you and guide you with the right information, practical applications, projects and internship. Data Brio Academy was the right guide for me!
After the interview all we can say thanks a lot Sayantan. We are glad you have made the most out of Data Brio Academy’s Business Analyst Certification course. We wish you all the luck and a successful career ahead.
